Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a quiet mountain resort town on the Bavarian border

At this point in my travels I was currently in Austria, and needed to make my way up through Germany so I could visit my friend in Luxembourg. When I originally planned my vacation I wanted to visit Neuschwanstein, Germany’s most famous castle.

I did some research and decided to stay in a small town called Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is right on Germany’s border with Austria and perhaps an hour away from the castle. After making arrangements I discovered restoration work is being done this year and there is lots of scaffolding that supposedly ruins the view. I decided not to go to Neuschwanstein, but Garmisch still turned out to be one of the most memorable destinations on my trip.

OK let’s get started. As with most of my days, this one began on an early morning train.

Day trip to Innsbruck–gem in the Tyrolean Alps

I preplanned a trip to Innsbruck, an Olympic-class city about two hours away from Zell am See. I got up bright and early for the morning train, and here it is arriving in the station.

Paragliding over Kaprun valley and visiting the high mountain reservoir and dam: Eurotrip Day 04

After watching the paragliders take off from Schmittenhöhe summit the day before, I was determined to do it myself. I made an appointment for around noontime, but had an hour or so to walk along Lake Zell before being picked up at the hotel.

This first picture may be my favorite of the day: a half sunken rowboat.

Austria’s mountain resort region of Zell am See: Eurotrip Day 03

Featured in the last episode of Band of Brothers where they play baseball in a field after taking the Eagle’s Nest, the time I spent in Zel am See and the surrounding area garnered some of the most memorable and rewarding sights of my trip.

I started at Salzburg Hbf to catch an early morning train.

Eurotrip Day 02: Still in Salzburg

Today I planned on taking an epic adventure to Hallstatt, a picturesque UNESCO site on the shore of a lake. Unfortunately, a litany of failures prevented this trip and essentially ruined my whole day.

I arrived at Salzburg Hbf to catch the 11:10 train, and here’s a pic from the main station hall.

Eurotrip Day 01: Adventures in Salzburg

This post begins a series chronicling my 38 day vacation through Europe, and I’ll try my best to condense the dozen thousand pictures I shot into one post per day. I began my journey in Austria, where I checked into the Amedia Hotel around midnight.

Day trip to Birka, a Viking island museum two hours west of Stockholm

This is my first post back from vacation, which I sadly havn’t had time to process the photos from yet. In the meantime, here’s a trip I made to an archipelagian island formerly home to a major Viking trade outpost and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The journey began at Stockholm City Hall, where all the tourist ferries berth.

Norra Djurgården walk from Ropsten to Universitetet

Norra Djurgården is a large openspace area situated between the two forks of the tbana’s northern red line. I meandered my way through here on a hike the other day.

This factory is just west of the Ropsten station on a road called Gasverksvägen.

Djurgården Walkaround

A few days ago I circumnavigated Djurgården right after a freak unexpected downpour.

I started out trapped in a hallway at Slussen, and was forced to take pictures of nothing while I waited for the rain to stop. IMO this single hallway provides the sole justifcation necessary for bulldozing the entire place.
